Life's been pretty busy on the farm lately, thats why I don't post too often but I wanted to do something so I did another this day in history post. Hopefully all this history isn't boring you guys :)
64 years ago today the atomic bomb was used for the first time. It was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima from a B-29 bomber and flattened the city, killing over 140,000 people. The story starts like this. Towards the end of World War 2 scientists in the United States were working together on a project called the Manhattan Project. At the time it was very, very secret. They were working on the development of the atomic bomb. Very little was known about atomic energy at the time, let alone how to use it in a bomb, but they worked around the clock and were able to detonate a test bomb on May 7, 1945. This was to be the only test. More of these bombs were then built and sent to an airfield within reach of Japan. Specially modified bombers were also sent to this airfield. The atomic bomb called Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 and Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. Together these bombs killed over 200,000 people. Although there have been many tests these were the only times that atomic bombs were used in war.
Here are some pictures.
